Mac Mail Settings

Mac Mail is the default mail program on Apple computers (the icon is a stamp). The screenshots below are from version 8 but the basic settings info is the same for any version. To view the full size image, simply click the thumbnail image on the left side of each step.

main settings

1) Open Mac Mail, then click on MAIL from the top menu and choose PREFERENCES.

Next click on ACCOUNTS and if you have multiple email addresses, be sure the correct one is chosen from the left sidebar.

With the ACCOUNT INFORMATION tab selected, verify that your settings match what is shown in the screen shot image.

Once you have made any changes, click the red button at the top left of the window to close and you should be prompted to SAVE, which you will need to do.

2) Next click on the ADVANCED tab and review those settings compared to the screenshot.

Starting with version 8, Apple added a pre-checked option to AUTOMATICALLY DETECT AND MAINTAIN SETTINGS. Please uncheck that option and verify your settings match the screen shot.

3) To check outgoing mail settings, you will need to click the dropdown menu to the right of where OUTGOING MAIL SERVER (SMTP) is listed, as shown in the image. Select the last item, EDIT SERVER LIST.

outgoing 2

4) In the new window that pops up, select the outgoing server you want to check / edit settings for in the top area (in some cases there may be multiple ones listed).

Then on the ACCOUNT INFORMATION tab, verify the server name is smtp.internet49.com as shown and if you see TLS CERTIFICATE, be sure it is set to none.

outgoing 3

5) Still in the same window, next click on the ADVANCED tab.

Here is another area where Apple pre-checks the option to AUTOMATICALLY DETECT AND MAINTAIN ACCOUNT SETTINGS (version 8 and later of Mac Mail) so you will need to uncheck that option.

Verify your settings match those shown in the screen shot, then click OK. Note that you will not be prompted to SAVE after clicking OK when in the OUTGOING MAIL section.

Close out of the settings area, then close and re-open Mac Mail. You can test by sending yourself an email.
